Here are five takeaways from the state’s unemployment data. State economists and budget officials recently concluded that spending, business investment and real estate values had been more robust than predicted at the onset of the pandemic, flipping a projected state budget deficit into a surplus. The notion that there are stubbornly in-trouble sectors of the economy - along with their corresponding workers - is striking because the state’s overall economy is recovering faster than many foresaw. “What I tried to do is figure out who are going to be our next customers because there are going to be a lot of vulnerable customers needing retraining,” she said.
Leibert said she designed the online data tool to help lawmakers and other policy makers understand who the most vulnerable workers are for long-term unemployment - because current forecasts are that many will not be able to get to work easily. That’s because, it appears, it’s the same people getting hit yet again, according to Alessia Leibert, research project manager for labor markets at DEED and the architect of the new dashboard. For example, as the state is now deep in our most serious surge of cases and deaths, we’re actually not in the midst of a corresponding spike in unemployment claims, as happened in the early and late spring when restrictions were enacted. Patterns emergeīut also eye-opening are emerging patterns from those most affected - and those not. That number itself is notable more than one in five Minnesota workers have had their jobs disrupted, given that the size of the state’s labor force has hovered close to 3.1 million during that time. The data is based on information about the 678,225 Minnesotans whose requests for some form of unemployment benefits were verified with their employers between March and August.
